Mt Hood- Timberline

Oregon's largest and best-known mountain stands guard beside the gorgeous Columbia River within viewing distance of Portland, considered one of the nation’s most exciting and livable cities in the country.

The mountain is easily accessible for RV’ers, car travelers, and those who prefer air travel. It's an hour east of Portland on Highway 26 and can also be reached by following Highway 35 south from Hood River for about 45 minutes. The summit area is incorporated in the Mount Hood Wilderness Area.

In Depth

Mount Hood is the most frequently climbed glaciated peak in North America. It should be noted that all routes to the summit are highly technical climbs and should not be attempted without experience and a guide, which are plentiful and easy to find. Mount Hood is surrounded by Washington County -- itself worth the visit.

Learn about the geology and history of one of the world’s most popular volcanic sites through one of many educational centers. Then head over the hills west of Portland, just eight miles from downtown, where a land of scenic beauty abounds with natural wonder and enjoyment. The county boasts world-class golf, winery tours, farmer's markets, outdoor recreation, superb dining and acres of shopping. Washington County spans 727 square miles and includes the growing communities of Beaverton, Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood and Wilsonville.
